Dalton Junior High School (DJHS) students and staff recently came together to support Epilepsy Awareness Month, demonstrating their commitment to advocacy and education. Inspired by students passionate about raising awareness for epilepsy, the school hosted a series of activities to inform the community and raise funds for the Epilepsy Foundation.
The student-led initiative included a call to action for the entire school community to wear purple on November 21, the color associated with epilepsy awareness. Additionally, during the school’s FLT (Flexible Learning Time) period, each hallway sold hot chocolate for $1. The event not only brought students and staff together but also raised funds to support the Epilepsy Foundation’s mission of providing resources, support, and advocacy for individuals living with epilepsy.
“We are incredibly proud of our students for taking the initiative to raise awareness and funds for such an important cause,” said Principal Spencer Gazaway. “Their efforts show the power of young leaders in making a meaningful impact on their community.”
The event was organized by DJHS math teacher Macavan Kalafut, who worked closely with students, including 8th grader Sophie McKeehan, who was instrumental in advocating for the initiative and helping to bring it to life. The funds raised during the event were donated directly to the Epilepsy Foundation.
